Francis Clinkscales was born in 1738 near Port Tobacco, Maryland. In 1777, at the age of 39, he enlisted in Capt. Hezekiah Garner’s Company, 26th Battalion of the Charles County, Maryland, Militia. He served during the duration of the Revolutionary War and achieved the rank of sergeant. After the war, he took a land bounty for his service and moved to Anderson County, South Carolina, where he died in 1837 at age 99.
